I am curious about what makes you the superhero of your life
You already know by now that I am a geek and a superhero “everything” lover. Well, if you missed it, now you know 🙂
One of my favorite questions to ask in a social context where I don’t know the people involved used to be:
If you had any superpower, what would it be?
The answers and the debates are always a delight. From invulnerability and invisibility to teleportation, everything is possible, and the most interesting part, of course, is the argument of why each would like that power.
When I was younger, I wanted “healing” powers like Wolverine or Deadpool just to be always safe. While growing up, I wanted to see the world and to be more efficient, so I opted for teleportation or super speed.
Now I have a dog, a kid, and a wife. The question changed altogether into something more profound and also more real to myself and the people around me:
What is your superpower? How are you doing the things that you do? (be the real superhero of your life)
And this latter question is the one I am more interested in now. This is my challenge to you, friend and reader. Dig deep inside you and get the answer. After you have it, if you are comfortable with sharing it, the comments below are open to your thoughts 🙂
In my case, for as long as I can remember, I loved to challenge myself and shift my mind to different activities. While in high school and college, many of my peers focused on one thing, but due to my love of knowledge, I was everywhere, maths, science, literature, etc.
This kept going, and it is still something that defines me. Basically, I function with two rules:
- Nothing is unachievable
- Everything is learnable
The first point is for my soul and spirit to encourage me to dream and do big, no matter how big :), and the second one is for my rational being to stop whining and start acting if faced with knowledge gaps or no knowledge at all.
So after this long(maybe boring) preamble, my superpower is:
Learning
I love to learn, and it seems that in short periods I can ingest and use massive amounts of information. This superpower is very fruitful at work, while I understand and use different technologies very fast, but also at home, where Google searches and tutorials are my friends when faced with problems I don’t know how to approach. I will tell you some stories about that at some point.
In any given situation, I am trying to learn and apply something from it. Extract, learn, and apply to adjust the context, the input, and the output to make sense of and resolve the problem at hand.
The downside of being able to retain and use very fast information is the fact that I am easily drained and feel tired, and the information once used in particular cases/problems is generalized and forgotten in bursts.
It sounds weird, I know, but to clarify, I can forget six months of using some technology in favor of a new one that I am discovering. That doesn’t mean that I lost the full ability to use the previous one, but I need to relearn it before use because all that is left are general functional concepts.
It is your turn now. What is your superpower, and how does that help you in your day-to-day life?
